An EY study of institutional investors found signals that "the paradigm of maximizing profits at the expense of worker satisfaction is being significantly challenged."
The "prevailing norm" in corporate America is "governance is lacking, resources are misaligned, and enterprises fly blind to their most critical cybersecurity risks, putting the company and shareholders on uncertain ground," said Scott Kannry, CEO of the cyber-risk engineering firm Axio.
That's a real possibility, according to some employment attorneys and regulatory experts, with the push potentially coming from state attorneys general rather than the federal government.
"The companies I've run across and worked with are all looking for ways to be 'best in class' corporate citizens in this area, and are open to engaging in a dialogue about what they can do better, and what it takes to be leaders," said Marc Treviño, co-head of Sullivan & Cromwell's corporate governance practice.
