Oversight Systems Inc. introduced version 4.5 of its Web-basedcontinuous monitoring and auditing software, featuring importantenhancements to its Workbench application for managing controlexceptions. The new version lets internal auditors, controllers andother compliance staff attach work papers and other audit referencedocuments to a specific exception, as proof it constitutes anerror. Version 4.5 can also assign a “reason code” that tracks howoften an exception occurs within a transaction, which can helpinternal auditors optimize process improvement efforts. AnotherWorkbench upgrade allows users to see correlations betweendifferent exception types. “It lets you have a more holistic viewof what problems are happening within the business process,” saysPatrick Taylor, Oversight's CEO. “It gives you the ability to seethe forest.”

The other significant enhancement is support for platforms basedon Microsoft Windows Server 2003, the dominant operating system forbusiness servers; previously Oversight supported only Linux. Othertechnical upgrades include enhanced password encryption andprotection against brute force password attacks. “After so manyfailed log-on attempts in a definable period of time, we lock outthat particular account,” Taylor explains. The new version alsoincludes single sign-on capability, which allows users to sign onto several applications at once.
