European Union countries that have yet to join the euro arestarting to shy away from the prospect, CNBC reports. Bulgaria, theEU's poorest nation, said this month that it has frozen plans foradopting the common currency.

Countries that are admitted to the European Union are expectedto adopt the euro once they meet certain criteria, and the abilityto join the common currency was once seen as an achievement.
